Black & White Photographics opened its doors in 1983 as a hand-printing lab — trays, tongs, and a red light, long before anything was automated. That’s still where our name comes from, and it’s still core to how we think about photography, even as we’ve grown to run one of the only fully custom automated black & white processing lines in Australia.
We stock the darkroom the way we’d want to walk into one ourselves: proper film developers, proper paper, and the trays, reels, and accessories to actually use them — sourced from the manufacturers who’ve been doing this longest.

A working range from Ilford and Kodak — including Ilford PQ Universal, Ilfosol-3, and Ilfotec HC, alongside Kodak D-76 and HC-110. Liquid concentrates and powders, for tray, tank, or machine processing.
Including Ilford’s indicator stop bath, so you can see exactly when it’s spent rather than guessing.
Ilford Multigrade RC, across glossy, pearl, and satin surfaces — variable contrast paper for anything from a first darkroom print to full creative grade control.
Paterson developing trays in a full run of sizes, auto-load reels for Paterson System 4 tanks, and the smaller tools that make a session in the dark actually manageable.
Ilford Ilfotol and Kodak Photo-Flo — a final rinse for film and prints that promotes rapid, even drying and helps avoid water spots.

We also stock a changing range of secondhand darkroom equipment in-store — enlargers, multigrade filters, Paterson tanks, tongs, and other gear that comes and goes as it’s traded in. Because stock varies week to week, this isn’t something we can list online — the best way to see what’s currently available is to visit us at the lab.
Automation changed how most film gets processed today, ours included. But we’ve never stopped believing there’s something worth protecting in the hand-printed image — the choices only a person makes at the enlarger, the version of a negative that only exists once. Stocking real darkroom supplies is part of keeping that door open, for our own printing and for anyone else who wants to keep working this way.
